Working in Partnerships

Last week I went to the Cooper-Hewitt Design Talks (great for those living in New York City) with Aidlin Darling Design. I took just two notes out of tonight’s discussion that are described below.

I will just briefly touch on the important thing that came out in the post-presentation conversation. Aidlin Darling Design creators have been working together for 15 years and mentioned the importance of working in partnership. In a work partnership, like in any relationship, it is good to fight for an argument. That seems obvious, right ? Apparently it is also important to keep the roles of a “creator” and an”editor”. While one person is involved into the project so much that it becomes difficult to incorporate critical thinking, the other one is the editor. This balance helps partners to develop the project successfully.

An interesting to me thing in design approach of this company was that they create experiences that are based on smell and feel (touch). They pay a lot of attention to how things feel when you walk on or touch them, what memories the smell evokes. They do it because the smell as well as taste are well-embedded into our memory, while visuals get lost over time.

Well, let’s see how we can develop the strong partnerships and designs that evoke people’s emotions.
