Simultaneous Satellite Exhibitions:

A Supplementary Platform for Stored and Permanent Collections of Traditional Art Museums

Summer 2012 - spring 2013, MFA thesis

Thesis Statement

This thesis posits that there is a need to expand and connect extensive collections of traditional art museums  to culturally underserved and geographically remote areas. The expansion aims to create supplementary and alternative platform to exhibit museum resources, bolster the context for interpretation and meaningful connection with the visitors.

Thesis Application

This thesis project suggests creating Simultaneous Satellite Exhibitions with digital content or reproductions of artworks from permanent and stored collections, united by common themes, where experimental or non-traditional interpretation is encouraged. The Simultaneous Satellite Exhibitions will be located in both cities and underserved areas to connect communities and provide access to culture. It will take art outside the museum walls, raising the profile of the local participating museums, and demystifying the experience of viewing fine art. These outcomes will result in increased museum attendance for the participating museums.

Audience Impact

The project provides more accessible and dynamic interpretation of permanent and stored collections
of traditional art museums to larger audiences, primarily 18 to 44 – year olds. The international, multi-locational nature of the project will allow visitors to be in touch with the much of the world through exposure to a variety of collections, cultures and connections with visitors in other locations. Such an experience is also aimed to make audiences look at art museums from a different perspective, and possibly increase the frequency of their visitation.
